Our first day at Dan & Liz's- The tour

Here we are at the home of Daniel & Liz.

The tour begins in the kitchen, Dan taking inventory and giving a run-down of all the goodies to eat.

The family room with the fantastic windows and the warmest fireplace ever!

The bathrooms with the walk-through shower.

Here, Gracie & Timber are getting acquainted. He wasn't sure of her at first- she kept insisting on trying to carry him & chase him. It didn't take long for them to become buddies though- a little bit of food smuggled under the table & he was hers...

Their Christmas tree & all those windows- brought such great light into their place.

One of the many views from outside their door.

And finally, the temperature. All we needed was the moisture to bring in more snow. It snowed about 3 inches Wednesday night, but Hailey got the majority of the snow from that batch of clouds. It was good enough for us though and the day we left, it started snowing & just didn't stop.

Day One of Skiing

So here is the trauma that occurred on our first evening at Dan & Liz's house. They had just left for their friends house to sleep for the night, Jake was back in their bedroom talking to his dad & Gracie decided to go back & visit him. She turns off the light, trips over my suitcase on her way over to Jake & hits her head on the corner of the nightstand. Needless to say, there is alot of screaming and blood as Jake carries her out. We managed to control the bleeding but ended up taking her to the ER for some steri-strips. She fell asleep during this process and the strips did the job beautifully. All this started at about 9:30pm and we got back from the hospital around midnight. I am thankful to both Dan & Liz for coming back so quickly. Between Jim & I, we both felt sick to our stomachs- mine from all the blood & Jim from rushing up from sleeping in the chair. A very long and emotional day for all. We were concerned about her going skiing the next day and also how the goggles would press up against her face all day. She was a trooper, insisting on going and couldn't care less about those goggles. We ended up placing a larger bandage over the strips so the goggles wouldn't rub against them. These photos were taken Saturday, after her two days of non-stop fun.

Here are a few photos of everyone (except Jim of course) getting the basic run-down of skiing. Gracie got in a few snow angels before really getting started. We were so fortunate on this day- there wasn't anyone else taking lessons, so we all got a private lesson.

Here she is acclimating to one ski

Celia & Jake. If it looks like C isn't having fun, it's because she wasn't. She had taken a couple hard falls and didn't want anything to do with snowboarding. She kept at it though & by the end of the day- she was done and wasn't sure how she felt about it.

Here are C & Jake- absorbing like sponges...

Here I am taking the "magic carpet ride" up to the learning slope and later getting some more basics on the larger slope.

Here, Gracie has graduated to the top of the larger slope...

Making her way down for the first time

A photo of Gracie on the chair lift which she rode many times over the duration of the two days. By the end of the day, she was screamin' down that slope. Took her share of spills but she kept going.

Here we are- all smiles. Her instructor, Brook in the background.

Looks like Timber is exhausted for her. Such love.

Day two of skiing

Adjusting her goggles...

Coming to a stop at the end of the run. She did so great!

Liz and Daniel were both able to join us on the second day. It's sunny but very cold- the wind really started to blow, especially at the top of the runs.

Jim, Dan & I watching Jake come in from his run.

Jim trying to catch Dan. Actually, he did great considering it's been at least fourteen years since he's been on ski's.

Gracie and her instructor.

The ultimate on Dollar and for Jake- who on the second day went down the biggest run they had open three times, Jim is on his left and Dan is on the right. Don't mistake Celia's absence for not participating. She actually took all these photos of everyone else. While we went into the lodge to eat lunch, C went out on her own and conquered the slopes and at her own pace. The definition of perseverance.

Ice Skating on Saturday

So unsuspecting...

Daniel teaching Jake a few moves and the first of many close falls (and actual falls) for Gracie. Of course she kept chuggin' along.

Jake getting the hang of it...

Daddy & Gracie

If she looks cold, trust me, it was freezing out.

Daniel showing off his hockey stop move...

One of many "breaks" to sit down. Those ice skates really hurt the feet.

Celia getting the hang of it...

Haven't we seen this image somewhere before? Jim trying to catch up with Daniel?

Pretty sure these are smiles of relief to be done, it was extremely cold and the skates really hurt.

The lodge was having a tree lighting festival later that evening. These ice sculptures had just been created for it. There was also a bear, a beautiful eagle and a decorated Christmas tree with real decorations stuck in it. This "bar" had holes on the other side deep enough for bottles to be kept chilled in. Free hot chocolate and cookies. I'm pretty sure hot chocolate is Sun Valley's signature drink- they just go together in the winter and you can find some just about anywhere. We met up with Liz after skating and ate dinner before checking out the lights.

Friendly game of Cadoo Saturday night

Getting started...

One of the categories required the player to shape some clay from a particular word for his teammate or the other teams to guess. What is Daniel thinking?

This photo just happened to get shot has Jim & I raced around the condo looking for something smaller than my big toe and bigger than his foot. Leave it to Jim to pick up the nearest recliner and bring it to the table.

This magical invention: air popcorn popper. The kids were mesmerized by it.
